Shojo (少女) is a Japanese word that means little female or little girl. The term is often used in the anime/manga world to refer to comic books for teenage girls between the ages 10 and 18.
Popular shoujo comics include NANA by Yazawa Ai, Hana Yori Dango by Kamio Youko and Hanazakari no Kimitachi e by Hisaya Nakajo. Subject matter of shojo comics varies, but alot of them deal with romance of some kind and many are placed in a high school setting.
The next age group of manga for older readers is called josei. These series are generally for reader between the ages of 18 and 30. In the States, these series are often just lumped into the shojo genre.
