Information

Alan grew up in the Meiren valley in the Rongxar county of the Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in China. Her father is a civil servant, while her mother was a former singer. She is ethnically Tibetan, and learned singing from a young age, and started to learn how to play the erhu at age eight. At nine years old, Alan was selected for the leading role in the TV drama Tai Yang Nu Shen, and first pursued a career as an actress.

After graduating from her musically oriented high school, she enrolled in one of the most prestigious music schools in China, the China National Chinese Opera and Dance Drama Company (解放軍芸術学院); where Lei Ying and Zhong Bao of 12 Girls Band were also being taught. Later in 2005, Alan released a cover album, Sheng Sheng Zui Ru Lan, under a Chinese indies label. Currently, the album has sold over 50,000 copies.

In October 2006 at the Shanghai International Art Festival, Alan won second place (tied with Filipino singer Jimmy Layo Marquez) at the 9th Asia New Singer Competition. In July 2007 she graduated the China National Chinese Opera and Dance Drama Company with excellent grades.

Alan was scouted when Avex China held auditions in Beijing, where she sung covers of Amuro Namie's NEVER END and Natsukawa Rimi's Nada Sousou. She caught the judges attention by performing these songs in a military uniform (which happened to be her school uniform). She debuted with a Japanese language single in November 2007, titled Ashita e no Sanka, which was characterised by her frequent use of the high notes found in Tibetan folk songs. This was followed by Hitotsu in March 2008.

In response to the magnitude 8 earthquake that hit her province Sichuan on May 12, alan released a charity digital single across Asia called Shiawase no Kane (also released in Chinese as Ai Jiu Shi Shou). alan was chosen to sing the theme song for the NHK TV special SAVE THE FUTURE, entitled Natsukashii Mirai ~longing future~ and produced by Sakamoto Ryuichi. This single was her first to break through into the top 20, and gained her a lot of exposure. alan then made her Chinese debut with the single Xin Zhan ~RED CLIFF~: used as John Woo's epic Chinese film Red Cliff's theme song. This film not only had the biggest budget for a Chinese movie at the time, but had the highest opening week with 108 million yuan (US$15.7 million).

From July through November, alan will release five singles in Japan - one per month - themed around the Japanese elements (Godai) elements: Earth, Sky/Heaven, Wind, Fire, and Water. The first single in the series, Natsukashii Mirai ~Longing Future~, was released at the beginning of July and became her first single to chart in the top 20. The second single, Sora Uta, is scheduled to be released in mid-August. The third single, Kaze no Tegami, is set to be released in mid-September. The October single is RED CLIFF ~Shin Sen~, the Japanese version of Xin Zhan ~Red Cliff~. The November single, the final single in the series, is Megumi no Ame.

She is currently still studying Japanese, and only has a basic grasp of the language.
