Wiki.theppn:Notices
From Wiki.theppn
Seeing how some users aren't familiar with how a wiki should be written (especially for something of this type), a few announcements have been necessary, which are now located here.
Ownership
Remember, any articles that you write are attributed to you, but please don't get indignant about proper edits. These are not considered anyone's property. See Wiki.theppn:Copyrights for more details. Works should be submitted because of the desire to spread information, not to draw fame or praise to oneself.
Japanese Names
Please remember to keep names in the Japanese order (surname first, given name last); if you can't decide which is which on a name, it will be fixed, but we don't want to run around fixing names; the links through the wiki have to be very uniform throughout. And when posting a style, see if there is a style page (like styles of J-Rock, etc.) so you can use those naming conventions. Keep in mind also that some groups like to spell their own names or the names of their albums and songs in either ALL CAPS or in lowercase. Please try to stick to those conventions as well. This will keep the wiki working smoothly. Thanks!
Correct External Links
To do external links with linktext do this: [http://url.org/ linktext]. For more wiki styling, check this out. Please remember to divide your articles (if they are long enough) into distinct sections so as to not seem long-winded and unfocused. Sections are created in this format:
==Title== (overview, history, line-up, etc.) --leave this line blank-- Write the contents of the section here, paragraphs will be formatted automatically and when you finish the section leave a blank line again. --leave this line blank-- ===Subtitle=== --leave this line blank-- to create a subsection add more = to the title and the wiki will automatically nest them. if you create more than 3 sections or subsections an index box will be created automatically.
Styling
Please keep all articles in the NPOV (neutral point of view); this keeps this cultural resource purely objective and more professional, increasing its use as an educational resource. Please refer to this styling article at Wikipedia: Policies and Guidelines.
This is also worth a look: Various information. Please read a few articles in Wikipedia (no stealing!) and try and get a feel for the writing style and adapt it to your own. Have fun!
Images
Could someone advise on hosting images? As Special:Upload is currently disabled I guess it's okay to host images at e.g. ImageShack, isn't it?
I am trying to work out some way of safely hosting images, Special:Upload is unacceptable to me, any ideas? --Womby
Can we use ImageShack like on the Morning Musume page or does the above being DELeted mean that images can be uploaded now? Does the wiki admin have a preference?
you can upload images --Womby
Well, there is free hosting on my server that allows hotlinking at Datamachine where we can create an account for the wiki, and I could write up an upload script. Just an idea to help contribute. -- Surye
Disambiguation
Just a reminder, if you want to make a page for something that has the same name as something else (for example, band members), please make a disambiguation page. Follow this guide on making those pages, I copied the template used there over here, so the instructions are the same. For example, if you want to make a page for a band member named only Ken, you will see that it is taken up already. Move that page and the talk to Ken (insert band/occupation/whatever) and make your page titled Ken (insert band/occupation/whatever), then make the disambiguation page at Ken with links to those two.
Romanization
Do not use vowels with macrons (the lines over them) to denote Japanese long vowels, these are inaccurate according to the hiragana, and, while not completely incorrect, they are a burden on users to type who may not know the alt codes. Please use the more accepted ou, ei, etc. Also try to avoid using 'oh' for the o sound, it is not proper and can lead to some mix-ups. Stick with the Hepburn romanization scheme, as it is much more popular and accurate than others.
Indies or Independent?
Japanese is kind of strange when it comes to importing foreign words, everyone know that. However, many are confusing indies with independent or with indie, and there is a pretty decently sized difference. The best way I've found is this:
- Indies - Independent Visual-Kei groups
- Indie - Style of music, it is difficult to describe (at least for me), but there are others with more knowledge.
- Independent - Any band on a small record label not under the direct control of larger companies
Call for Korean/Chinese Pages
Because wiki.theppn is an Asian popculture wikipedia, I say that there should be more complete pages about Korean/Chinese artists. I just added one for Ping Pung, and I saw there were a few pages that weren't really doing much. Remember, discographies are pretty easy cause Korean/Chinese artists don't release many singles, if any at all xD
Suggested artist fix-ups/page creations:
12 Girls Band, A-Mei, Anita Mui, Andy Lau, Chen Min, Faye Wong, Angela Chang, Cherry Filter, Crying Nut, Bi, Jang Na Ra, Lee Jung Hyun, Yu Chae Young, Lena Park, Park Ji Yoon, Sun Yan Zi, Landy Wen, S.E.S., David Tao , Jolin Tsai, Wang Lee Hom, Sunday Girls, Jay Chou, Will Pan, Tarcy Su, Hang on The Box, Guo Mei Mei, F.I.R., S.H.E, Vivian Hsu, Whee Sung, Cookies, Twins , Xiang Xiang, Zhang Ziyi.
For Korean, I'd like to recommend using the official romanization guide for Korean, found here, rather than the older system which isn't that exact nor consistent. I also recommend beginning each syllable with an uppercase letter within the word. -Idolcrash
- Not really related but the Korean section is growing *_*V I mean... before there were 5 (maybe 6) on K-artists but now its has more than 50 pages on K-artists. so yay! *belly dances* --Gus
Hiatus/Disbanded
If you know a group is on hiatus or dispanded, scould you please add the meta-tags to their profiles? The change can be made by adding one of these meta-tags to the bottom of a page. They look like this:
- [[Category:Hiatus]] [[Category:Disbanded]]
Bit of a Cockup
I forgot to pay NTT for my internet connection so they disconnected me, I came home and dashed off to 7/11 and paid the bill and the line re-activated so we are back, sorry for the 2 outages in 1 week its very amateur. --Womby
Lyrics
Since many pages seem to be lyrics pages, I think it is about high time we figure out a standard way of added them. Ideas? -Idolcrash
- I've seen a lot of our song pages display lyrics on them - I'm more worried about people getting mad about their romanizations being on the wiki, because no doubt about 75% of the original transliterators haven't been contacted about it. I'd be pissed too. ~ Wapiko 05:31, 30 October 2005 (JST)
- That is one of the reasons I offered hosting to mink, apart from the fact that she does a great job, the problems she was having with her original host were starting to tempt people into mirroring her work, I would much rather link out than mirror. --Womby
Oricon
Womby and I both agree - if an artist is in the Oricon top 10 on the front page but their name is red, do something about it! If they're selling that well, there's no reason we shouldn't have a page for them. ;) ~ Wapiko 13:53, 30 October 2005 (JST)
Featured Articles
Since when did we start making articles to be featured? This seems to detract from the ability of other users to be able to create a featured article. Perhaps every month a so, a few of us who've worked on this for a while should meet (maybe in IRC or something) and decide what should be featured for the month. -Idolcrash
- I decided that we needed to start bringing more attention to non H!P material, the Wiki was becoming the H!P wiki, I don't know if it has made a difference, but early on I struggled to find content to mark as featured, sometimes I was using an artist that had only been added the week before. I was the only one adding articles until I mentioned my selection method (is this H!P, no, feature it then) to Martzb00r just before I went on vacation, yesterday he went a bit crazy adding all the way to the end of the year but I am just happy we have enough non H!P content on the wiki that he can do that. The only annoyance this caused for me was yesterday morning I told wapiko to add her bird work as a feature for week 45, and Martzb00c beat her too it. --Womby
- And now as I continue through the history I see that Wapi and Martz sorted this out while I slept, isn't collaboration fun. --Womby
- Some say fun, the sane call it Communism. Have you taken a look at the community portal yet? I kind of fucked up bringing a template over from wikipedia. -Idolcrash 10:48, 31 October 2005 (JST)
- Communism o_O Two people have a disagreement and sort it out amongst themselves, I think the sane would say its called being a grown up.
- I have looked at the template you added, but not intently, I haven't worked out what has gone wrong with the layout but then all those {{{}}}[]{}{{{}}}} bits are not easy on the eyes, I will keep trying. --Womby

- Feel free to move any of the articles I make to a later date ^^ I just did it for convenience, I have no preference over it and won't go apeshit if you change it. I picked a few artists pages I wanted to plug, then just did a random page thing. Question, does Mika Todd count as H!P, since she went solo and jazz in the US and such? Oh, and also, is it Wiki.theppn:Featured article for 2006 week 1 or Wiki.theppn:Featured article for 2006 week 01? The history didn't go that far back. --Martzb00r
- I am totally fine with what you did, it was just funny how wapiko was all ready to add week 45 when she got up and you filled in the whole year ^^
- Mika, I would have been hesitant to add her because she is known for country musume, but I didnt feel strongly enough about it to mention once you made the page, I think some of the Product pages are getting to a level where they could be featured too.
- as for week 01 or week 1, I have no idea, shall we just wait till January, I am sure in December wikipedia will have a featured article ready to go which we can look at to see what title it uses. --Womby
- And wapi gave me a spanking to let me know that Mika was never in country musume but coconuts musume, I would like to apologise for my pathetic recall and request a rub down with some ointment. --Womby
- I was a hardcore H!P fan for over 3 years, it's gotta show for something. xD ~ Wapiko 16:12, 31 October 2005 (JST)
- I was joking about the communism thing (I like to parody the kind of hysteria prevalent where I live), but any help with that template is really appreciated.

Upcoming Downtime
I am moving apartments this coming weekend, currently the new apartment does not have a fibre connection so there is no possibility of running the wiki from there, we have not yet received authorisation from the landlord to get NTT in and install the fibre so we could be looking at 2 or even 3 weeks disconnected. That is the bad news, the good news is that because of the short notice for this move we will still be in possession of the old apartment so after we move the servers will be left sitting on the floor all alone. There will be down time, when NTT do enable the new connection the old one will instantly go off-line and I don't know how quickly I will be able to get things moved (3 servers and 2 UPS units are not the easiest things to move). The other problem will be that I will be nowhere near the machines so if anything goes wrong I wont be able to fix it ......
Well they could have phoned 5 minutes earlier, so we have now received authorisation from the landlord and have booked the NTT visit for 4pm Saturday, if everything works out properly this will mean the service should be online instantly and the wiki will only be down for a day.
So in short, the wiki will go offline Saturday morning (Japan) and hopefully be back online sometime Saturday night. --Womby
- Nuuuu! D=
- ...ah well. I need to figure out the time difference, I'm on the East Coast of the US (-5:00 from GMT if I remember correctly) --SPL 01:05, 13 December 2005 (JST)
Downtime Retrospective
My ISP sucks balls, they suck balls longer and harder than a coked up Thai hooker.
- Friday (one day early) they changed the settings on my account and went on an all weekend drinking binge or something.
- Saturday when I moved all the equipment into the new apartment the login failed and nobody was available to take my call until Monday. I test the connection using the free services provided by NTT and confirm that the connection itself is fine, I spend the evening watching some BBSquare content.
- Monday morning my ISP insist that the reason I cannot login is because NTT have made a mistake with the configuration of my account and refuse to do any other form of investigation until I have spoken to NTT, Monday night I return home and NOW my account is successfully logging in but the machine is unable to send data onto the ISPs network.
- Tuesday morning, now my account is both successfully logging in and sending data onto the network but tracerouts confirm there is a configuration issue on the ISPs network and packets are dying 2 hops out.
- Tuesday midday, I phone the ISP again and after almost 30 minutes on the phone finally persuade the guy on the end of the line that it is not an issue with my machine, at 1PM he set off to investigate the problem and get back to me, at 2pm the wiki is back online and I am still waiting for his callback.

- Aww...D=
- Ah well. It's back now and that's what matters! On the last day of school for me before winter break, too! ^.^ --SPL 00:31, 21 December 2005 (JST)

Wiki.ThePPN got mentioned in this Caroline interview. The page starts off as German, but the interview is in English. We get linked in the article, and then as a separate link down the bottom. Eep xD --Martzb00r 17:16, 2 March 2006 (JST)
Wiki Server Upgrades
As I am sure you could not have failed to notice the wiki has been working harder then an AV Actress in a 24 hour bukkake marathon, timeouts and failures have become so common as to appear routine. I have spent the better part of today configuring a new server arrangement. The wiki is now hosted on a Dual Xeon instead of the P4 it was previously crippling, the machine is quite hefty and should cope until the next upgrade. I have also taken the opportunity to work on some performance tweaks, the site is now split between apache+php and lighttpd daemons, lighttpd is dedicated to serving the images it is highly optimized for this kind of task and will allow apache to be focused exclusively on the heavyweight PHP work.
The concept is sound but the configuration is new, If you notice any problems with the new setup please leave a comment and I will work on it as soon as possible. (I fixed the date) --User:Womby(Talk)
- Well Fixing the date didn't appear to have the best outcome possible, the Recent changes list now doesn't update, I am guessing this is because all the new posts are appearing with datestamps earlier than the old posts. --User:Womby(Talk)
- Ummm i dunno if this should go here but i noticed none of the little images on here work. like the buttons up at the top for when you edit, new images you upload work but won't work when viewed on a page. i.e. Ohyama Yurika. -- Eimii 03:28, 27 August 2006 (JST)
- Yeah, it's the thumbnails that no longer work. New ones anyway. ~ Wapiko 04:08, 27 August 2006 (JST)
- That would be because image magic isnt installed, I will fix that....... done --User:Womby(Talk)
- It would appear that all images edited/uploaded within this time have not worked. @_@ Or something. See MAISELF. ~ Wapiko 12:23, 27 August 2006 (JST)
- Oop, I found some more things. When I tried to edit the OLIVIA timeline, there was no image on the preview. Also the timeline seems to have completely disappeared o_O I noticed that on redirect pages the little |-> graphic thing doesn't show up anymore either, hmm. --Martzb00r 13:28, 27 August 2006 (JST)
- Same with the images above this edit textarea. XD ~ Wapiko 14:24, 27 August 2006 (JST)
- Thumbnails, Timelines, Little Icons. Fixed, Fixed, Fixed (please confirm) --User:Womby(Talk)
- Yay, the timeline shows up, but at the moment it's just an image. Before, you were able to click on the links within the timeline to the releases and such. --Martzb00r 18:35, 27 August 2006 (JST)
- Hmmm, seems to work for me, can you point to an example? --User:Womby(Talk)
- Nevermind, it's fixed now. It was something to do with the fact that I'd edited the Olivia timeline in the time between when it was updated and when you just fixed it now. --Martzb00r 22:34, 27 August 2006 (JST)
- What do we do about thumbnails/new images made during this time? I thought it could be fixed by just re-saving the page again, and it looked fine in the preview, but the new image I uploaded for MAISELF is still not working. @_@ Is it my cache again? ~ Wapiko 01:07, 28 August 2006 (JST)

No idea what happened sorry
I just checked the site and saw it was not responding, I don't know why it was not working I just restarted the server processes and it came back up. I will try and keep a closer eye on it, 30+ hours is just rude. --User:Womby(Talk)
Well wasn't that even more embarrassing
The main boot disk on the DB server died, I had no replacement and no backup of the config, I had to buy a replacement disk and perform a complete re-install of the system. It is back up and running now but I expect it to have more teething trouble until we get it all happy again. In an effort to ensure this doesn't happen again I am going to put the database into replicated mode so we will have 3 machines performing all the tasks in parallel instead of dedicating each machine a subset of tasks.--User:Womby(Talk)
- Oh my goodness, I just realized we're back. :D Hooray! ~ Wapiko 02:37, 9 November 2006 (JST)
- Sounds good. I don't really know what it means, but sounds good. --Saa 08:46, 9 November 2006 (JST)
- My reaction exactly xD;;;;; --zeli 10:09, 9 November 2006 (JST)
- Owch. That sounds really expensive, but at least the Wiki's up and running again! ^^ --Martzb00r 12:46, 9 November 2006 (JST)
- It wont really be that expensive, I already have the site running on 2 machines, one for the DB one for the app, better distributing the work wont make much different I think. The only thing I need to work out is how to handle file uploads. --User:Womby(Talk)
Embarrassment Level 2
Everything broke at the same time, I lost 2 machines and a fistful of Hard Disks.
Initially I lost disks in both main servers, luckily again we did not lose the DB disk along with the backups.
Additionally I lost my firewalls cutting off both the internal and public networks, sorry it has taken so long to get back online. I am still working on the 2nd machine so as ever we are holding on by a thread, good luck. --User:Womby(Talk)
- Good luck indeed. :)
Will there be any changes to the backup plans after this? --Saa 10:33, 19 February 2007 (JST)- Hopefully we will be syncing the backups off to S3 after this. --User:Womby(Talk)
- I've been told by a user that it seems only sysops are allowed to make edits currently. ~ Wapiko 12:04, 19 February 2007 (JST)
- I wondered what was going on. --User:Womby(Talk)
- LOL~ What about image uploading for now? ~ Wapiko 02:24, 20 February 2007 (JST)
- I thought it had been re-enabled. I think I just got non-admins access working again. --User:Womby(Talk)

- Timelines seem to be borked. Is this related to this? Can you look into it? Thanks. :) --Saa 12:43, 25 February 2007 (JST)
