A Few Things

  • I don't think The Last Samurai should have an article, but I'm not sure how you want this.
  • The article on Mana was stolen from wikipedia, I am not sure what the policy should be with articles from wikipedia, so I'm not sure if you want to delete it.

I'm having problems logging in, this is idolcrash.

Questions...

I was looking around after doing a lot of updating and was wondering about a few things.

  • 1) I passed by the Shiina Ringo page, and I think that her surname is Ringo. Should the page be moved to Ringo Shiina and the redirect moved to Shiina Ringo?
  • 2) I started doing some pages for songs and albums, so I just made a couple of categories for now (Songs and Albums). If you want to change those, go right ahead.
  • 3) Is the category for Anime/Film/Drama Soundtracks going to be removed as well, since I doubt that any artist/group exists there that doesn't have a style?

Thanks. --Yoshiaki Abe 18:53, 27 Sep 2004 (JST)

MP3 uploading...

I wanted to upload an mp3 like Idolcrash did for another band, but I was wondering about copyright issues. What is the wording on uploading mp3s? --Yoshiaki Abe 00:35, 2 Oct 2004 (JST)

Old question, but I think the answer is 20 to 30 second sample is fair use. Also, Ogg Vorbis might be better for several reasons, such as MP3 being patented and the patent holder demands royalties. --pmsyyz 13:05, 18 Apr 2005 (HKT)

Check Up

Heh yeah that would be great! Hopefully I'll be able to finish the whole Arashification over the next week or so, but that really depends on how busy I get at uni. THANKS! ^_^ --saffy 13:54, 25 Oct 2004 (JST)

Blood Type, Zodiac sign

I think it would be interesting to have a page that lists various artists by bloodtype/Zodiac sign/whatever else. It would be interesting to see a pattern among these very talented people!

RSS feed not working

The RSS feed of the Recent changes pages is broken. Can you please look at it? I use the RSS feed to keep track of the changes. Thanks. --tiny 22:54, 17 Apr 2005 (HKT)

Interesting, I was surprised to see this message because I use the RSS feed too, in fact without it I wouldnt have seen this message. I checked with the rss validator here and it tells me that the feed has a blank line at the beginning. I will investigate tomorrow to see why. --Womby 23:58, 17 Apr 2005 (HKT) (I am also annoyed at seeing all those HKT timestamps)
Atom feed looks invalid. Dunno what you can do about it. --pmsyyz 03:27, 18 Apr 2005 (HKT)
Atom is failing for the same reason, blank line at the start of the page. --Womby
Solution found, it was because I upgraded the timeline plugin, there was a blank line in the script which shouldn't have been there. --Womby

An Apology

Womby, i just wanted to apologize about the Onyanko Club, etc. thing. I honestly thought it wasn't a problem because i assumed most of it was fact. I've learned from this and i'll be even more careful with what i post here from now on. I just hope i won't be banned because i really love contributing. I just wanted to say that...^^;

Edit: I also just wanted to say that i wrote an apology to the owner of the website.

--Eimii 12:28, 18 Apr 2005 (HKT)

Womby - there was one thing I was thinking about doing, but it would be cumbersome since it would involve lots of changes. I got the idea from Wikipedia. What would be cool is if whenever someone mentioned a year, they made it a link. The years would link to the "Event Timeline" for the corresponding year. Not only would that help people navigate better through music history, but it would help keep the timeline updated.

Also, I started a new page that I thought might be cool. I was thinking about the Kevin Bacon degrees of separation and came up with a Degrees of Separation page for the bands. I've only got a few entries in it, but when that develops, it could be really cool in helping link members of bands.

registration problems

Can you look into this? A google search for the "You have not specified a valid user name" error that people are getting (a couple are detailed at the help talk page) shows other Wiki's had a similar problem. I logged out, tried to sign up with a new nick and got the same error. Strange. --ilikejpop 09:05, 8 May 2005 (HKT)

Vandalism

Can you please ban 82.77.137.102 for repeated vandalism (url spamming of mostly D'espairs Ray). --tiny 06:20, 31 May 2005 (HKT)

L'Arc - Sakura (Drummer)

Sakura does have a public last name, Yasunori. I have no idea how to go about doing whatever needs to be done to clear up the confusion, though. :\ -- Zeli17

Porn spam

There has been an increase of vandalism lately - links to porn, erotica, advertsising, etc etc. All cases in the past have had the IP address of 80.58.*.*. >.<;; Just wanted to bring it to your attention.--Emeraldas 13:19, 22 Jul 2005 (JST)

I second this I've seen a lot from that IP.... and also 81.168.72.70 needs to be banned. :\ Porn. -- Zeli17

I banned 80.58.0.0/16 on the firewall, I will chuck in a wikiban for the single ip too. --Womby

"pic needed" template

I was thinking... wouldn't it be cool if there was a template you could add to an article to put it on a list of articles that need a picture? Kind of like adding a {{stub}} template shows that an article needs more actual information, you could add something like a {{pic}} template to indicate that an article needs a picture. This is a media-centric wiki after all... :P

Template:pic

-- KenobiwanX 15:31, 4 Aug 2005 (JST)

Well let me tell you, I think that is a great idea. --Womby

I added the template to Kobayashi Azusa's page, yay!

Category:pic

Adding/editing before registering.

I edited and added some pages before i registered, is there somehow i can make those pages point to my user instead of my ip (85.194.50.25)?

Thanks.

/Taurmindo

I bet you could make a redirect...like, go to the "Move" tab or whatever. ~ Wapiko

DA PUMP

I seriously have no idea how that redirect happened o_O

No problem, it just looked a bit redundent --Womby

New Password mail

I was logged out for some reason (weird, I'd saved the password and everything o_O) and I tried to get back in, but it wouldn't let me..so I clicked the 'new password' mail button. I did it like 20 minutes ago and still nothing, argh x.X -- Martzb00r

The cookie for the saved password sometimes gets confused and disappears, it happens a lot less since I upgraded to 1.4 but its still possible, I just restarted the mail server and sent a test email to myself which got through, give it another try, also check your spam folders. --Womby
Knowing me, I figured out what my password was just after you post this xD Oh well, thanks anyway. --Martzb00r
On your preferences page there is a "confirm my email" link, give that a try and see if it gets to you, I would like to be sure its actually working. --Womby
Nope. I tried that (my email was already there, but it said it was unconfirmed) and I still haven't got an email yet o_O Its been like a day xD Its not in my 'spam' either --Martzb00r

Chinese/Korean Names

Hihi, I was thinking of promoting wiki.theppn in some Chinese music communities I know of, to get more than just Japanese pages for artists popular to western people, and I just realised there are no style guides for names. How should wiki articles write Chinese names?

Usually artists have two different names; a Chinese three barrelled one (ie Sun Yan Zi) and an interchangable western name (ie Stefanie Sun, same artist) What should the names be set out as? Some artists, such as Jolin Tsai, are almost never known by their traditional names, but in this wiki we seem to set out Japanese names in the Asian order, instead of the western order.

Also: With Korean names (ie Park Ji Yoon) are romanised about 50,000,000 different ways as there's not set way to do it x.X I'm lost on these ones. -- Martzb00r

For artist names we are using the v-u-den precedent, whatever their last CD titles them as is canon, and all other variations should be redirects to the one true name. If their CDs don't list an English variation then I guess we will need to look for other official promotional material and find the most recent example. --Womby

Login issues

I can't login, I think because my username is "pmsyyz" but the new version of MediaWiki with certain settings expects it to be capitalized. The error message is:

There is no user by the name "Pmsyyz".

So if you could look into it, maybe rename (hmm, it exists at Wikipedia) my account, I'd appreciate it. --User:pmsyyz 14:31, 18 September 2005 (JST)

I Will have a look at that. --Womby

Sakura

Wahuh? Theres a big discrepancy here with caps. There is a page Sakura (The L'Arc drummer) and SAKURA, the R&B lady. Eep o_O I even remember moving this page to 'Sakura (Drummer)' but someone moved it back. --Martzb00r

No discrepancy there, as the style guide states, artist names are written in the form the artist uses, SAKURA uses caps, Sakura doesn't, if their is a conflict then we need to make a disambiguation page. I fully expect that at some point we will have a CD or album titled Sakura and will need to move Sakura, Is Sakura (Drummer) really the best title we can come up with? --Womby

Links to download songs

Someone went through Mikitty's discography (singles as well) and put links to download all the songs. Is this allowed? -Saa 23:35, 26 September 2005 (JST)

I don't know if it should be allowed or not, probably not perhaps its something we need to discuss --Womby
I don't think they should either, since it's very clear copyright infringement. I hesitated to revert them, though, since the person put a fair amount of work into it, and also since I remember having seen links to torrents for songs. We're not the ones hosting the mp3s, so we should be fine, but I still don't feel comfortable linking to them. -Saa
I saw you reverted them. Just a question- is it alright to link to torrents from Jpopsuki, or some other tracker? --StarPrincessLita 06:58, 27 September 2005 (JST)
When Saa first mentioned it I assumed he was talking about the torrent links but then as I continued through the recent changes I saw all the mp3 links and thought damn that's just insane --Womby

Why does it still say it's linked to from the page?

Ok, so I've been fixing a lot of caps. So I went through and fixed the caps in the Tanpopo pages, and so edited the template so it linked to the non-caps page. So how come when I go the the 'what links here' for one of the pages, it still says that all the pages link to it? They should link to the non-capped version...unless I edited the template wrong or something. o.< But when I look at the template, it links to the non-caps page.  ??? --StarPrincessLita 07:16, 27 September 2005 (JST)

That sometimes happens, I wouldnt worry about it too much when the pages get edited again they sort themselves out. --Womby

And another problem. I'm trying to move a page, but even though where I'm trying to move it to is only a redirect, apparently it has history...

Sorry, not trying to flood your page or anything...but I'm trying to move Roman ~MY DEAR BOY~ to Roman ~My Dear Boy~, which is only a redirect, but...apparently Roman ~My Dear Boy~ has a history, so I can't move anything over it.  ??? --StarPrincessLita 07:25, 27 September 2005 (JST)

Because move page replaces the existing page the history that already exists would be deleted completely, it would be possible for a vandal to modify Morning Musume into a redirect to melody. and then move the melody page over Morning Musume, I will delete the correctly titled page then the move should work. --Womby

Current Age function

I had an idea to make a template that would calculate an artist's current age using javascript. Unfortunately javascript doesn't work in wiki articles. I did some research and figured out how to get around this, but it involves modifying the mediawiki files on the server. Anyway, if you're interested, here's what I came up with. I've tested it on mediawiki 1.4.5 and it works great.

Copy the following into a file named AgeExtension.php and save it in the extensions directory:

<?php

# To activate the extension, include it from your LocalSettings.php
# with: include("extensions/AgeExtension.php");

$wgExtensionFunctions[] = "wfAge";

function wfAge() {
    global $wgParser;
    $wgParser->setHook("age","renderAge");
}

function renderAge($input) {
  if (ereg("^([0-9]{4})[./-]([0-9]{1,2})[./-]([0-9]{1,2})$",$input)) {
    ereg_replace("^([0-9]{4})[./-]([0-9]{1,2})[./-]([0-9]{1,2})$",'\\1.\\2.\\3',$input);
    list($y,$m,$d)=explode('.',$input);
    $output = "<script language=\"javascript\">
y1 = $y;
m1 = $m;
d1 = $d;
today = new Date();
y2 = today.getFullYear();
m2 = today.getMonth()+1;
d2 = today.getDate();
age = y2 - y1;
x=false;
if (m2==m1) {
if (d2<d1) {
x=true;
}
}
if ((m2<m1)||(x)) age--;
document.write(age);
</script>";
  }else{
    $output = '<b style="color:red;">ERROR</b> (birthdate must be in "yyyy.mm.dd" format)';
  }
  return $output;
}

?>

To get it to work, add the following line of code to the end of LocalSettings.php:

include("extensions/AgeExtension.php");

Voila! Results look something like this:

Input:

Current age: <age>1989.11.11</age>

Displays as:

Current age: 15

I thought this would be useful on individual artist pages, and on some group pages in the members section to show the members' current ages relative to each other. (Only currently active groups of course.)

BTW, the javascript in the extension is a bit ugly in places. I had to tweak it quite a bit to get it to work properly without mediawiki trying to wikify it as it rendered it. Also, I tried a PHP-only version, but it only accessed the current date when the page was edited. Javascript accesses the current date on the client's end every time the page is loaded.

-- KenobiwanX 11:32, 5 September 2005 (JST)

Why is it in javascript at all? it appears to be a basic math operation I am sure just using the standard php date functions would work perfectly well. --Womby
See above. PHP functions in extensions are run only when the page is updated. So if the article you're viewing was last updated/cached a month ago, then the function would give the subject's age as of a month ago. Javascript is outputted to the browser where it is run when the user actually views the page, so the function would be using the actual current date. -- KenobiwanX 01:55, 6 September 2005 (JST)
Was that just from your tests or from the docs? because mediawiki caches rendered pages in the database and flushes them when they are 4 (I think) hours old. --Womby
Well, it seems that way from everything I've read, but I decided to test it anyway. I made a test extension that basically just outputs the current time and date at the moment the PHP is processed. I made a test page using the new extension, and 19 hours later it still displays the old 19-hour-old time and date (the time and date of when I last edited the page), meaning the output of the extension was cached in the database, and mediawiki didn't see the need to flush it and re-render it from the original PHP function because no edits were made to the page. I'm guessing that if I leave it and come back in a few days, that the time and date still won't have changed. The extension with javascript on the other hand continues to work perfectly. No 4-hour delay, no 19-hour delay, no 3-day delay. -- KenobiwanX 06:51, 8 September 2005 (JST)
Hmm I will have a look at the caching code, it might pack the cache and refuse to expire anything until the page updates, did you manually flush the cache? I might just write an extension to flush old cache entries. --Womby
