Behind the Name
- Usagi's name is actually a pun. Tsuki means moon while the kanji no means field. Usagi means rabbit and when her named is formed together it means "moon field rabbit". However Takeuchi Naoko (the creator) made it into a pun for when the "no" is spoken it sounds like your saying "Rabbit of the Moon". Its a play off an old legend about a rabbit who lived on the moon. In this legend the rabbit pounded mochi and the reason its based on a rabbit is because of the dark shapes seen on the moon's surface.
Family

Personality
- Usagi is portrayed as a young teenage girl who is a clumsy glutton and does poorly in school. You often see her rushing out of her house in the morning and still being late. She sleeps in class and is constantly complaining about being hungry at school or when she sees food. Despite these vices, she is still a very sweet and caring girl. She often tries to get out fighting and sees the good side in anyone. While in the beginning of the series she is seen as very inmature and cowardly. As the series progresses you see that change a bit. She becomes a very strong-willed fighter and will do anything possible to save the lives of people, whether they are on her side or not. In many cases, she isn't afraid to sacrifice herself for others. However this kindess can be seen as a weakness as well, for on serveral occasions people will abuse her trust and manipulate her kindness.
Different Forms
- Throughout the three series (anime, manga and live action), Usagi has many forms from civillain to royality. This section is about how each form looks and how it came to be:
- Princess Serenity:
This is Usagi's identity in the past. She was the only child to Queen Serenity and was in love with Prince Endymion. In the manga, their love was forbidden. In the live action series, it was her dispair over his death that caused the destruction of the Moon Kingdom. Princess Serenity is seen as being in her teens and wears a long white dress that flows out at the bottom. At the top it is trimmed in gold and there is two strings of pearls that go along underneath the trim. Her sleeves are round and white, a bit on the puffy side. On the back of her dress there is a small white bow. When the Moon Kingdom is destroyed, Queen Serenity sent Princess Serenity to Earth to be reborn (in all versions).
- Tsukino Usagi:
Tsukino Usagi is Sailor Moon's real identity. She was born to Ikuko and Kenji Tsukino and has blonde hair in the anime and manga. In the live action series she has brown hair like the rest of her family. As Tsukino Usagi, she usually wears her school uniform (called a seifuku in Japan). It's this school outfit for girls that inspired the seeraa fuku (or Sailor outfit). Her school uniform has a navy collar with white stripes. The shirt is white and depending on what season, short (spring/summer) or long (fall/winter) sleeves. Usagi's uniform also has a red bow on the front. For a skirt, Usagi has a long or short skirt depending on the season as well. Its colored navy like her collar. Usagi wears standard black/dark brown school shoes with short white socks. In the last season of the anime and the last part of the manga, Usagi's uniform is darker in color compared to her old one. This is because Usagi enters highschool, and therefore wears a new uniform.
- Sailor Moon:
This is Tsukino Usagi's senshi (soldier) identity. She first appears in this form in episode 1 thanks to Luna's magic. Usagi keeps the form of Sailor Moon for about two and a half seasons before getting a new transformation. Sailor Moon's hair remains blonde (and turns into blonde in the live action series), with little red jewels covering the front of it. Her forehead has a gold tiara with a red jewel in the middle, and her ears have earrings in the shape of cresent moons. Sailor Moon has a red choker with a small yellow moon on it. The collar of the fuku and the bow remain the same color as the school uniform. She wears white gloves that come up to her elbows, the part by the elbows is colored red. Sailor Moon's skirt is a dark blue like that on her school uniform. She then wears red knee-high boots with white trim around the top and little crescent moons on them.
- Super Sailor Moon:
This is one step up from Sailor Moon. Sailor Moon gets the Holy Grail after the three tailsman from Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are put together. When Sailor Moon grabs the Holy Grail from Eudial a bright light forms and it transforms her fuku into a different color. In the Manga, Sailor Moon asks the senshi to put their hearts together and the Holy Grail appears to transform her. Her tiara now has a crecent moon on it and she has small white barettes in her hair. Her fuku collar is still blue but the stripes on it are now yellow. She has little transparent sleeves and her bow stays red. Her skirt is now white in color with yellow trim around the top of it, a small red heart with a little crescent moon is now in the middle of it. The bottom of her skirt is trimmed with yellow and blue. The bow behind her skirt is a very link pink/white and its very long. Her boots and gloves remain the same. Sailor Moon has this form from the 2nd half of the S season of the anime and manga to the end of the SuperS anime/manga.
- Eternal Sailor Moon:
This is one step up from Super Sailor Moon. In the Anime, Saturn tells everyone to put their hearts together and she becomes Eternal Sailor Moon. In the manga she just obtains a new henshin item. Her fuku for this changes a lot. Most notably the colors. Her collar stays the same, navy with yellow striped. She now has puffy pink sleeves that are trimmed at the bottom in red. Her bow now looks like wings and there are wings on the back of her fuku. Her skirt is now yellow, with red and dark blue layers at the bottom. the top is trimmed with a small red line. the bow on the back has been transformed into small wings as well. there is a red ribbon that runs down either side from her skirt. Her sleeves are still white with red trip at the top, there are small white things connected to the trimming, and there is red right around the wrists. Her tiara dissapears on this outfit, and there is just a crescent moon on her forehead.

- Neo-Queen Serenity:
This is Tsukino Usagi's future self. Serenity is ruling around the time of the 30th century in Neo Tokyo. She is in her early twenties for she stopped aging after giving birth to Chibi-usa. Neo-Queen Serenity wears a long white dress that is similar to her dress as Princess Serenity. However this dress is sleevless, it runs really long and trails well below her feet. The top of it is trimmed in gold with some pearls going across underneath it. The queen has wing like things attached to the back of her dress, from that there is a small train of fabric. The Queen also wears a tiara in her hair, its gold with some red on it.
Transformations
- Throughout the BSSM series, Usagi gains several items that help her become Sailor Moon. In Japan, transform is called henshin and the words Usagi and the other senshi say are often called henshin phrases by fans. Usagi has by far the most ammount of henshin sequences in the anime. These will be listed in chronological order in which they appear in the anime, manga and live action series.
- Moon Prism Power Make-Up! ( )
This was Usagi's first transformation. This transformation was used up until the first part of the series ended. The transformation was first seen in Episode 1 of the anime and Act 1 of the manga and live action show. The transformation requires the tranformation brooch which was given to her by Luna. Her brooch from her first transformation is later transformed into the Crystal Star Compact in the next part of the series.
- Moon Crystal Power Make-Up! ( )
When the R part of the series starts, Usagi gains this transformation from her late mother Queen Serenity. In the anime its because she is nearly defeated by a Cardian and her mother comes to her aid. The brooch she used for this transformation was badly damaged in the S season. The transformation first appeared in Episode 51 of the anime and appeared in act 13 of the manga. The transformation required the Crystal Star Compact.
- Moon Cosmic Power Make-Up! ( )
When the S season started, her previous brooch was damaged by a Daimon. It wasn't till the 2nd episode of the S season that her broken brooch transformed into a new one. It was created with Usagi and Mamoru's love for eachother. The theme behind her transformation sequence was hearts (which was a symbol for many things in the S anime). It first in episode 91 of the anime and Act 24 of the Manga. This transformation must be used before Usagi can use the Holy Grail, which she gained in the later part of the S season. Her transformation required the Cosmic Heart Compact.
- Moon Crisis Make-Up! ( )
In the later half of the S season, Usagi gains the legendary Holy Grail. With it, Usagi can transform into Super Sailor Moon as long as she's already Sailor Moon. It first appeared in episode 112 and act 30 in the manga. She temporarily cannot use this transformation in the beginning of the SuperS season because the Holy Grail is destroyed at the end of the S season (anime only). It isn't until Pegasus comes around that she is able to transform back into Super Sailor Moon. this new transformation into Super Sailor Moon is first seen in episode 130 and act 34 of the manga. Intrestingly enough, even though the Holy Grail is destroyed at the end of the anime, in the S movie she uses it to transform. The Holy Grail however is not destroyed in the manga and just dissapears with the appearance of Pegasus' new transformation. The 2nd time around she uses this transformation she uses the Crisis Moon Compact.
- Moon Eternal Make-Up! ( )
In the beginning of the Stars season (anime), Sailor Saturn tells her to open her mind and when she does, she borrows the power of her friends to become Eternal Sailor Moon. She is only able to stay as it temporarily in the first half of the Stars season and her brooch turns back into the Crisis Moon Compact. However when Nehellenia is defeated for a 2nd time she now has enough strength and power to control her new powers, so she is able to stay as Enternal Sailor Moon. Likewise, her Crisis Moon Compact permenantly becomes the Eternal Moon Article. This transformation is first seen in episode 167 and act 42 of the manga. However in the manga it is known as 'Silver Moon Crystal Power Make-Up!'. Also in the manga, Usagi simply obtains it. It's unclear where she gets the new brooch and henshin phrase.
Attacks
- Throughout the Series, Usagi also gets a wide variety of attacks at Sailor Moon. Once again, in the anime she has more attacks then the rest of the senshi. This is a list of them that appear in the anime, manga and the live action series.
- Moon Tiara Action ( )
This is Usagi's first attack as Sailor Moon (aside from her supersonic waves).
Anime
Her story first starts when she was Princess of the Moon, Serenity. She lived in peace there and was in love with the Prince of Earth, Endymion. Queen Beryl and her army plotted to attack nearly destroyed the Moon Kingdom. In the process the Queen killed Endymion and Serenity. The Queen of the moon was devestated and let the Moon Kingdom be destroyed. However before doing that she sent Serenity, Endymion and the senshi to Earth to be reborn in modern times. This is where Tsukino Usagi comes in, the reincarnation of the Princess and the soldier of love and justice, Sailor Moon. She met Luna and became Sailor Moon. Soon after that, she had found her four other companions Mercury, Mars, Jupiter and Venus.
