Biography

The history of Soroban started out in the beginning of 2002. Before then, they each began to learn how to play instruments and make music. They met through school activities, such as music clubs. Yumehito, the guitarist and leader, started a band with Ryuuji as the vocals, bassist Tatsuhi, and drummer Yuuya. Called Primrose, they achieved some success despite their ages (between 14-16 years old). Yumehito wrote all the music and lyrics for Primrose, and they released a mail-order only single. At the start they performed a lot for high-school talent shows and ones for teens, but they later progressed to bigger events.

Two years later in April 2004, Primrose changed their name to Soroban (そろばん, which means abacus). With a new name, a new look, and new songs, Soroban started all over again. This time they were determined to make it big, because as Primrose they never appeared in magazines, and didn't participate in big events.

On June 17 at Ikebukuro Cyber, they had their first live as Soroban. At this live they distributed 100 copies of their first single Shirokuro Radio for free. The next day at a Takadanobaba Phase live, they gave away another 30 copies of the single. Shun, the guitarist of DuelJewel helped produce this single.

In the next few months Soroban performed at a quite a bit of venues, and on October 6th they had their first one-man live at Akasaka LAN. This one-man was sold out through pre-orders only. One month later, on November 11th, Soroban released their second single (first "real" single) -RAM-/Orange Tegami and reached 7th on the Oricon Indies Singles Chart. This sold out pretty fast so a month later a second press was issued.

The year 2005 was an eventful year. They performed at a lot of various events and did some coupling tours. Five singles were released during this time. The first was a live only single in March named Momoiro Ichigo, and was sold at their one-man live "Momoiro no Ichigo Uri" at Meguro Rock May Kan. The second and third "twin" singles Charu and Chaarii were either sold at lives or by mail-order in May and June (also was released on minidisc, or MD). The fourth was also a live only single, Misui, that was distributed free to all attending the one-man live at Takadanobaba Area in the beginning of August. The last was finally a "normal" single released later in August named Sora ni Hanabi.

Near the end of 2005, Soroban signed to DANGER CRUE RECORDS label and created their own sublabel SKY CRUE RECORDS.

At the beginning of 2006 they released material on their new label. January 11th was the release of their first and only mini-album Gekisai Chapel. This release contained rerarranged and rerecorded songs from the singles in 2004, and some live only/mail-order singles from 2005. After that, a three month single release campaign was planned. During January, February, and March the singles Koudou Gestalt, Ginrei Hydration, and Kinmei Nouzenharen were released respectively. A few one-man lives were performed to promote these single, and a few were sold out as well.

After these release, the band became very silent. No new releases or lives were planned. In July 2006, Soroban announced on their official website that after starting 2 years and a couple months ago, they would be disbanding. The reason; the same that many bands give when they disband, the musical differences. The members weren't feelling the same way about their music, or how it should sound anymore. Their last concert was on August 2nd.

Since their disbanding: Yumehito has became a member of the band Ayabie (彩冷える-ayabie-), while Ryuuji, Tastuhi, and Yuuya has started their new band Zoro (ゾロ).
