Sanctuary is the Kingdom Hearts II theme song for the US/Global release. This was written and completed before its Japanese counterpart, Passion. The arrangement, for the most part, is the same as Passion's, except for the complex background vocals that featured in Passion. Unlike Simple and Clean before it, Sanctuary is accredited to Utada, Utada Hikaru's western release name that she uses under Island Def Jam.
[edit] Disambiguation
There are two known versions of Sanctuary to be found in Utada's discography (listed chronologically). Note that these do not include versions of Passion, and that these titles may be subext to change. These different versions are:
- Sanctuary ~opening version~
- Probably found on the western Kingdom Hearts II Original Soundtrack as disc one, track three. This is the opening theme for Kingdom Hearts II. There is one major change between this and Passion's opening version. Instead of Utada singing, 'Hitoshirezu', she sings, 'So many ups and downs' in reverse.
- Sanctuary ~after the battle~
- Probably found on the western Kingdom Hearts II Original Soundtrack as disc two, track 33. This version differs from the opening version by being longer, slower and having more of a piano base to it.
