Sakamoto Maaya got her break at the age of 15 when she secured the part of Kanzaki Hitomi in the anime series Vision of Escaflowne. While her voice acting may not have been anything note-worthy, it was her vocals on Escaflowne's opening song, Yakusoku wa Iranai (written by Kanno Yoko), that really got her noticed.

She has had a number of parts in various anime shows, and even voiced characters in the odd computer or video game (including Dead or Alive: Xtreme Beach Volleyball and the Japanese version of Kingdom Hearts). Her debut album, Grapefruit, was released in 1997.

The majority of Maaya's work is anime related and she has performed many themes and insert songs for shows, often working with Japanese composer Kanno Yoko (including work on almost all of her solo albums and singles). During 1998 and 1999 Maaya released a couple of albums with Higuchi Chieko as part of a duo called Whoops!!, though Maaya's participation in the group is often overlooked. Maaya's voice has a sweet quality to it that's best demonstrated in her more light-hearted songs, but there's an underlying quality that's hard to deny.

After having worked primarily with Kanno Yoko for over seven years, Sakamoto separated from her former mentor and began working with hit-maker, h-wonder and a variety of their composers. Many fans were upset with the change and felt that Sakamoto's career had taken a downward turn until recently, when she began collaborating with Kanno again. On 2008.04.23, together they released "Triangler" and fans welcomed the duo back with open arms, shooting the single up to #3 on the Oricon Weekly Chart, Sakamoto's highest ranking to date.
