Robotech

Robotech is the name of the Harmony Gold-released of the Macross series which is accused of being almost completely untrue to the original storyline.

The main reason for this accusation is that Robotech is not simply a dubbed port of Macross. It is an amalgamation of Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Genesis Climber Mospeada, and Super Dimension Century Southern Cross. All three of these series had seperate storylines, yet similar artwork and design. Macross, Southern Cross, and the non-Robotech Orguss were three 'super dimension series' that shared the same sponsor (Big West). Mospeada was produced by a different set of people.

As a project in itself, the amalgamation of the three unrelated storylines to form a single, cohesive arc was technically successful. Barring the few loopholes that every written work suffers, Robotech's three 'sagas' form a multigenerational storyline that is completely unrelated to the original SDF Macross.

While it works in its own canon, Robotech changes enough explanations presented in Macross to warrant the above-mentioned accusation. Most notably of these are the differences in explaining protoculture and the technology behind the Valkyries(JP)/Veritechs(US).

Other notable differences in Robotech vs. Macross are the Westernization of names. For example, Ichijyo Hikaru became Rick Hunter, Hayase Misa became Lisa Hayes, etc. The only people whose names didn't change were the famous Lynn Minmay (also Linn Minmei) and Roy Focker (Roy Fokker).
