Niizuma Seiko (新妻聖子) is a Japanese pop singer and musical theater performer who debuted as a solo artist under the Pony Canyon label in 2006. She is most well known from her role in “Miss Saigon,” where she played the lead role, Kim.

Information

Niizuma Seiko (新妻聖子) was born in Aichi prefecture, Japan on October 8, 1980. At the age of eleven, her family moved to Thailand, where she attended high school at the International School of Bangkok. Upon graduation, Seiko moved back to Japan and entered Sophia University in Tokyo to study International Relations and Law. During her studies at Sophia University, Niizuma was discovered by a talent agency while singing in a performance. Seiko's first taste of show business began in January 2002, where she worked as a TBS reporter in the television program, “The King's Brunch.”

In the summer of 2003, Seiko was chose out of 5000 hopefuls to play the part of Eponine in the Japanese stage production of the famous musical, “Les Miserables.” Surprisingly, Seiko had had no formal vocal training or acting experience before this time. This production only marked the stage debut of Seiko. A year later, Seiko was cast in the four-month-long stage production of “Miss Saigon,” where she played the lead role, Kim. From here, Seiko Niizuma's stage career skyrocketed. In 2005, Seiko received the 31st Kazuo Kikuta Drama Award for her excellent performances in both “21C: Mademoiselle Mozart” and “Madame de Sade,” where she played the lead roles in both productions. Also, Her highly acclaimed acting and singing lead her to receive the 2006 Award for Excellence in the field of Dramatic Performance at the Agency for Cultural Affairs Arts Festival.

Following her extraordinary stage performances, Niizuma Seiko was signed to Pony Canyon Records, releasing her debut single in July of 2006, Yume no Tsubasa. Between her frequent roles in Japanese musical productions, Seiko has released two more singles; Ai wo Tomenai De ~Always Loving You~ in July of 2007, and Virgin Road in January of 2008.

Currently, Seiko is playing Margrid Arnaud, a lead role in the world premier musical, “Marie Antoinette.”
