MAISELF is Mai's debut solo album. Two versions of the album were released: an Album+DVD version and an album-only version. Nomiya Maki, formerly of Pizzicato Five, was her visual producer for this album. A 16-page booklet of nude body painting is included with both versions as a first pressing bonus. Both CDs contain seven new songs in addition to her previous three singles, but the album-only version has a bonus megamix track of Mai's previous three singles by DJ Micchy for first press. The DVD features behind-the-scenes footage of her body painting. It also has the PVs for Reborn, Eyes, and Princess Candy. The album's highest-known ranking on the Oricon was #16 on a daily ranking.

It appears that the jacket covers are the first of Mai's since Ruppina to feature her wearing clothing, however upon closer inspection the jackets feature Mai being completely naked except for the rollerskates - the "clothing" is actually body paint.

The "Moushiwake Single MEGA MIX" included as a bonus track on the regular edition features the songs Rainbow, Princess Candy, Reborn, Eyes, and Squair (in that order).

"Bye Bye Blues" is a cover of the 1996 song by Hicksville.
