Kago Ai (加護亜依) is a Japanese actress. Prior to that, she was a member of Hello! Project as a fourth generation member of Morning Musume and the sub-leader of W.

History

Kago Ai joined Morning Musume as a member of the fourth generation, along with Ishikawa Rika, Yoshizawa Hitomi, and Tsuji Nozomi. She and Tsuji graduated from Morning Musume in August of 2004 in order to form their own unit, W, which Kago was the sub-leader of.

Scandal and Termination

On 9 February 2006, it was confirmed that FRIDAY — the same tabloid magazine that prompted Yaguchi Mari in 2005 and later Fujimoto Miki on 1 June 2007 to resign from Morning Musume — would be publishing photos of Kago smoking while underage. Kago was immediately suspended from all work with Hello! Project, and she returned to her hometown of Nara to live with her family.

Kago's suspension ended almost one year later, in January 2007. She returned to Tokyo and began working as a receptionist in the offices of Up-Front Agency (UFA) while the details of her comeback were decided. The first news of her return appeared in the March issue of FRIDAY magazine, which was leaked onto the Internet on 22 February 2007.

On 24 March 2007, Weekly Gendai — another gossip tabloid — reported a new scandal involving Kago. The tabloid published photos that showed Kago visiting a hot springs resort with Ishimoto Yasuyuki (37), the owner of the popular SOMA café. The article that accompanied the photos said that the two had spent the night alone together, but that when confronted, they claimed to be cousins attending a family function.

Two days later, on 26 March, Up-Front Agency confirmed that the story was true as reported and that they had decided to terminate Kago's contract with the company. In February 2006, Kago was caught smoking underage and was suspended from all activities within Hello! Project. In the beginning of 2007, her suspension was lifted and Kago returned to UFA.

On 26 March 2007, she was released from her contract with Up-Front Agency and is the only member to have been expelled from H!P. [1] After her termination, Kago and Ishimoto Yasuyuki left Japan to live briefly in Los Angeles during the summer of 2007 [2].

Comeback

In early April 2008, OhMyNews! announced that they would be broadcasting a 6 part interview with Kago, her first official interview since 2006. In addition, a recently published Nikkan Sports article stated Kago had plans to return to show business as an actress. Kago has confirmed this and added that the company representing her is a very new agency called "Mainstream." [3]

  • In the Mechaike Bakajo Kimatsu Test, Kago narrowly missed out on being crowned bakajo (Idiot Girl) after scoring two points more than Tsuji Nozomi. However, in the Mechaike Okajo Taiikusai Test Kago was crowned kusojo (Crap Girl) with a score of 29 out of 100.
  • Kago and Tsuji Nozomi shared the world record for the largest hula hoop spun at 4.08 m (13.4 ft) in diameter. They set their record on 1 January 2004, during a live New Year's Day television special at Nippon Television Network, Tokyo, Japan. [5] The record appeared in the 2005 and 2006 editions of the Guiness Book of World Records. [6] The record was eventually broken by Ashrita Furman (USA) in September 2005. [7] [8]
  • Her Morning Musume mentor was Goto Maki.
  • When she first joined Morning Musume, she had a reputation of speaking in Kansai dialect. She was featured in a Pocky commercial using her Kansai dialect. However, as she grew, she began to use a Tokyo accent instead. She stated on FUN that she doesn't use Kansai dialect anymore to avoid sounding harsh, but it does come out when she's angry (thus scaring other members, such as Ishikawa Rika or Michishige Sayumi). She also stated that Nakazawa Yuko (who ironically bursts out in Kansai dialect very often) suggested that Kago uses Tokyo dialect to maintain a positive image.
  • Kago has many trivial relationships with many members of Morning Musume. Although she is not very close to Tanaka Reina, they are still very big fans of each other and would often blow kisses to each other in photoshots or during concerts. Kago's relationship with Kamei Eri is the strongest of 6th Generation. Kamei said on FUN in 2005 that she had been "catching glances from Kago-chan. ♥". The two have been featured in photobooks hugging and making hearts, and it is said that one of the reasons Kamei auditioned for Morning Musume was to meet Kago.
