The Japan Gold Disc Awards, or Nihon Gold Disc Taishou (日本ゴールドディスク大賞) is one of Japan's most prestigious yearly awards. The Golden Disc award is the equivalent of the Western world's Grammys.

Information

Founded in 1987 by Record Industry Association of Japan, the winners are based on record sales which makes them very credible; however, the winners are predictable. The award ceremony is held during the first quarter of the year, usually during March. This is opposed to Nihon Record Taishou, which is a year-end awards ceremony.

Its main objective is to recognize artists who not only make incredible sales for the year, but it also cites artist with huge impacts or influences as well as those who make a difference for the Japanese recording industry, and lets the music fans know about the awarded artists' achievements.

In 2006, The Japan Gold Disc Awards celebrated its 20th anniversary.
