Goto Maki (後藤真希) is a Japanese pop singer, who is currently signed under avex trax's urban sub-label, rhythm zone. Goto first appeared in the music world in 1999, when she became the only third generation member of girl group, Morning Musume. She soon became a fan favorite, and in 2001 she became a soloist within Hello! Project.

History

Goto Maki joined Morning Musume in 1999 at the age of 13 and debuted on the single "LOVE Machine", which would sell over one million copies and become Morning Musume's highest selling single. She soon established herself as a talented singer and dancer and was the lead vocalist in the majority of Morning Musume's early singles.

Goto debuted as a soloist in March 2001 with the single "Ai no Bakayarou". In September 2002, she graduated from Morning Musume to focus on her solo career. As a soloist she released four albums and numerous singles. She was also a part of various Hello! Project shuffle units and several one-shot units, including Gomattou, Nochiura Natsumi, and DEF.DIVA. She was also a part of Morning Musume's 10th anniversary unit, Morning Musume Tanjou 10nen Kinentai.

On 28 October 2007, the last date of her 2007 Fall tour, Goto announced that she was graduating from the Hello! Project. According to a Nikkan Sports article, her graduation was in response to the arrest of her brother, Goto Yuuki, as well as conflict with UFA concerning the direction of her singing career.

Goto removed herself from the public eye until 27 February 2008, when the publication Weekly Shincho published candid photos of her smoking a cigarette at a pachinko parlor. [1] [2] On 25 March 2008 her official blog reopened, announcing that Goto had been doing dance and voice training in Los Angeles, California. She returned to Japan at the end of April, with no new updates to her blog as of yet.

On 18 June 2008, Goto's profile was removed from the UP-FRONT GROUP artist list and it was announced that she had signed a contract with avex trax. [3]

  • Dropped out from Hinode High School.
  • Goto is the second of three siblings.
  • Although she says people constantly consider her to be "cool" and "distant", she admits to not knowing when she behaves like that.
  • Utaban host Ishibashi Takaaki has given her two pets in different ocassions: an iguana called Abe-chan and a miniature Dachshund called Taka.
  • Has stated that she does not like her nickname "Gomaki".
  • She is the second former Hello! Project member to join avex, after RuRu.
