Gal Circle (ギャルサー, Gyarusaa) is an NTV dorama that began on April 15th, 2006, airing at 9:00PM. It stars Fujiki Naohito as Shinnosuke, a cowboy from Arizona who is sent to Shibuya to look for a cure for his ill, father-figure friend. Toda Erika plays Saki, a gal who is constantly crossing paths with Shinnosuke. She is part of Angel Hearts, a gal circle led by Remi (Suzuki Emi) that lives for parapara dancing.

Spoiler-Free Synopsis

Shinnosuke has been sent from Arizona to Shibuya by his friend, the ailing Geronimo, in search of Imoko, the girl who holds the cure for him. Upon his arrival via parachute, he witnesses hundreds of gals dancing parapara and mistakes them for Indian girls in a tribal dance. In each episode, he singles out one gal in his search for Imoko. The first gal, Saki, is at first put off by Shinnosuke's naivety and lack of understanding about modern Shibuya culture but soon begins to help him unknowingly in his quest.

Characters

Main Characters

  • Shinnosuke - A cowboy sent by his friend Geronimo to Shibuya to search for Imoko. He is naive and pure at heart as a result of being raised in the deserts of Arizona by Geronimo.
  • Geronimo - An Indian living in the Arizona wilderness. He has an illness that will take his life if Shinnosuke does not find Imoko.
  • Saki - A gal who dropped out of school and isn't welcome at home. She is suspected by Shinnosuke to be Imoko, but it is revealed that she is not at the end of episode one. Saki is one of the low rungs on the ladder of Angel Hearts but wishes that one day she can dance in the center of the stage in front of everyone.

Supporting Characters

  • Remi - The leader of Angel Hearts. Despite being worshipped by the rest of the gals, she has not let it go to her head. Remi is kind, good-hearted, and believes that fighting with and gossiping about fellow gals is not only self-destructive but also endangers Angel Hearts.

  • Nagisa - The leader of the Kurogumi division of Angel Hearts. Nagisa was overweight as a young girl and has become anorexic because of it. Although she seems to share Remi's principles, her motive at the beginning of the drama is to oust Remi from her position as the leader of Angel Hearts.
  • Rika - One of Remi's sidekicks. She is a scammer who asks friends for small amounts of money at a time and never intends on paying them back.
  • Shizuka - Saki's best friend. She is rich and generous, yet she is picked on to the point of attempting suicide in the first episode because of her wealth.
  • Sumire - Another of Saki's close friends. She, along with Saki and Shizuka, are considered low on the rungs of the Angel Hearts ladder.
  • Yurika - A temperative gal who constantly fights with Saki. She has a knack for fashion designing. It is revealed in episode three that she is 23, seven years older than she claims to be.

  • Momo - Geronimo's daughter and a friend of Shinnosuke. She helps Shinnosuke look for Imoko.
  • Ichinose - A novice nightly patrolman whom Shinnosuke meets his first night in Shibuya. He almost arrests Shinnosuke for setting up a camp in a park, but Shinnosuke outwits him by simply asking him questions about why he executes the law. Eventually, Ichinose lets Shinnosuke become a boarder in his small house.
  • Hayakawa Akiko - A local drugstore worker who becomes infatuated with Shinnosuke. Her coworkers call her "ugly" on a regular basis.

Episodes

  • Episode 1: 30m Fearful Fall To The Ground, Friendship Killed By Death Mail (地上30メートル恐怖の落下、友情殺す死ねメール, Chijou 30 Metre Kyoufu no Rakka, Yuujou Korosu Shine Mail) - The introduction of several main characters, including Saki, Shinnosuke, Momo, Remi, Nagisa, Shizuka, and Sumire. Saki has numerous encounters with Shinnosuke and is annoyed by him, so she tells him to die. Shizuka is bullied by her fellow gals and told the same thing. When she decides to take the matter into her own hands, Saki saves her, only to find the tables have turned and she is the one about to die. Through his own version of tough love, Shinnosuke teaches Saki that the word "die" is not one to use lightly. She realizes that she doesn't want to die and wouldn't wish it on anybody, and tearfully apologizes to Shizuka for her brutality.
  • Episode 2: Losing Confidence...Weaving A Friendship Dress With Tears (失われた信用…涙で紡ぐ友情のドレス, Ushinawareta Shinyou...Namida de Tsumugu Yuujou no Dress) - This episode focuses on Rika, a gal who scams her friends by asking only for small amounts of money with no intention of repaying them. The Angel Hearts are invited to a dancing event at Club Zero, but in order to go, each girl must pay 5000yen to cover their costume costs. Meanwhile, a thief is terrorizing Shibuya, stealing mostly purses. As Shinnosuke comes close to catching him, Saki thwarts his attempt and asks for 5000yen. Rika sees this and tells her how to get rich - make what you want to borrow little amounts and get it from lots of people over time: "It's more difficult to ask for small change back." Rika gives Saki 5000yen and goes on her way. The collective money is stolen that night by the thief, and the gal who was in charge of the money (Ran) lies and says it was Rika who took it. Rika is kicked out. As it turns out, Shinnosuke has Ran's purse because it is a superstituous object (a stuffed multicolored crow) and burns it. Saki sees this and is too late, as the money is all gone. Shinnosuke helps Rika and Saki to atone for his mistake and helps them make costumes with long grass. The other gals laugh at this the next morning but allow Rika back in. After the meeting, it is revealed that Nagisa is actually the money stealer, and her goal is to oust Remi as the leader of Angel Hearts.
