Death Note

Death Note is a shonen manga written by Ohba Tsugumi and illustrated by Obata Takeshi. The series made its debut in a 2004 issue of Weekly Shonen Jump and finished in May 2006, with a total of eleven volumes released.
The series has since been adapted into three live-action films, and a thirty-seven episode anime. There is also talk about a novel which is currently in production.

Synposis
The story is begins in November 2003 when a young but brilliant high school student named Yagami Light (夜神 月) finds a notebook in his school yard titled "Death Note". Inside the cover is a list of rules which inform Light that if he pictures someone's face and writes their name into the Death Note, they will die. Eventually a Shinigami shows up to keep track of the book which he had dropped and search for some amusement. After testing the book, Light decides that it is his role in life to cleanse the world of criminals and begins to systematically eliminate people who he considers unworthy of his ideal utopia.
Eventually the police pick up on Light's killing spree and unable to figure out what to do, enlist the help of the legendary detective L. Light and L begin a cat and mouse game of wit which turns out to only be the beginning as new characters are introduced and people start to worship Light as the God of the new world, Kira.
Trivia
- Death Note is full of political themes and due to it's subject matter is seen as very controversial. The sale of the manga was banned by several schools in China in response to Shenyang incident.
- A novel has also been announced but not much more is known at this time.

Death Note is written by Ohba Tsugumi and illustrated by Obata Takeshi, who also did the art of the Hikaru no Go manga. It is now officially complete and consists of eleven volumes (108 chapters) which were serialized monthly in Shounen Jump magazine from early 2004 to May 2006.

Movie Adaptation
Two live action movies are currently anticipated. The first was released June 17th, 2006 and the second was released in October of 2006.
