Information
'Base Ball Bear' is a name they coined themselves. Every members really liked a song by Japanese female singer Chocolat called “Baseball and E. Presley”, so they decided to use “baseball” as part of the band’s name. The “bear” part has no special meaning.
BBB comprises guitarist/vocalist Yusuke Koide, who’s from Atsugi, in Kanagawa Prefecture; bassist Shiori Sekine the only female member of the band – who’s from Saitama City in Saitama Prefecture; guitarist Shohei Yuasa, another Atsugi native, and drummer Daisuke Horinouchi, who’s from Tokyo.
They met while they were in high school, specifically when Koide decided to organize a band to play at a school festival. They kept at it, and then sent a demo tape to Toshiba EMI talent scout Keitaro Kamo, whose other musical discoveries include Number Girl, Super Butter Dog and Kishidan. Kamo liked what he heard and mentored the band preparatory to their recent signing to Toshiba EMI.
In November 2003, Base Ball Bear signed with Blitz Pia Records, an indies label. They immediately release their first mini-album Yugata Generation on November 26. The band also released their first single, YUME is VISION, in April of the next year. It was the first of the band's songs to be accompanied by a music video and they colloborated with Yuki, a Japanese fashion magazine model and Base Ball Bear fan, to create it.
During 2005, the band released their first full-length indie album, HIGH COLOR TIMES, on March 16, 2005, and started playing concerts to sold-out crowds in larger venues. Also, Shiori Sekine was cast in one of the lead roles in the film Linda Linda Linda, which features some of the band's music.
In January 2006 Base Ball Bear signed with EMI Music Japan and immediately released an introductory album, Band B ni Tsuite, on January 12. (They had released another version of Band B ni Tsuite on October 14, 2005, but the new release included one new song and new arrengements.)
They played on the Nyakunyaku Nannyo (若若男女) Summer Tour with chatmonchy and Snowkel and released their first major album, C, on October 29.
In 2008, the band went on a solo tour called "17-sai Kara Yattemasu Tour" (Starting from 17 Tour). Their first single of the year, changes, was released on May 8, 2008 and was the ending theme of anime series Toshokan Sensou.
Base Ball Bear’s early demos were very amateurish, although it was obvious tell they had a lot of originality and potential. The band’s more recent material is much tighter and extremely well-performed, combining a strong power-pop sense.
