Asaka Yui (浅香 唯) is a famous singer, idol, and actress. She is best known as Yui Kazama from the drama Sukeban Deka III and in the movie YAWARA!. She released a handful of number one singles in the late 80's and was one of the biggest idols during her era.

Idol Success

Asaka Yui was born and raised in Miyazaki City. In 1984, she was the Grand Prix Winner for a Young Girls Comics Magazine. Yui was featured as the main character of the comic Shooting Star. A year later, she debuted as a singer with the single Natsu Shoujo. Up untill the end of 1986, Asaka Yui enjoyed a moderate successful career as a singer and an idol.

In 1987, she got her big break when she was casted as the main character, Yui Kazama, for the drama Sukeban Deka III. The show become a hit and made Yui well known. And due to rise in popularity, Asaka Yui was featured as a common guest on such shows like The Best Ten, Uta no Top Ten, and Yoru no Hit Studio. And also, her ninth single, Niji no Dreamer, became her first #1 single on the Oricon charts.

Then in 1988, she starred in another Sukeban Deka. But this time, it was the mvoie Sukeban Deka Azama San Shimai no Gyoukushuu, where she played the youngest daughter. In the same year, Yui continued enjoying her successful career with her singles, C-Girl and Cecile, reaching #1 on the Oricon charts. At the time, Asaka Yui was named one of the four Idol Divas of Japan along with Kudo Shizuka, Nakayama Miho, and Minamino Yoko.

A year later, she starred as Inokuma Yawa, the main character of the movie YAWARA!. She also sang the theme song, Neverland ~ Yawara! Main Theme, for the movie and the song reached #2 on the charts.

After Success

At the turn of the decade, Asaka Yui started to write her own songs, starting with the single Self Control. Then in 1993, problems arose when after her management begun limit her rights of her [stage] name (Asaka Yui). During this time, there was also a published story that reported that Yui's real name was Kawasaki Aki. Due to this, she took a break from show business.

But, she returned to the music scene in 1997 as YUI (unrelated to the other YUI). Soon after, her management and YUI reconciled their differences and let Asaka Yui use her stage name freely, restarting her career as an actress. Today, she is frequently appearing in many doramas and variety shows.

In 2001, her fanclub closed down. Then in 2002, she married drummer Nishikawa Takahiro. She gave birth to the couple's first daughter on September 12th, 2007.
