Akanishi Jin is one of the two most popular members of KAT-TUN, along with Kamenashi Kazuya. Often referred to as Akame, Kame and Jin are the main vocalists of the group. They also starred in the drama Gokusen 2 together. Apart from acting in several dramas, he is known for penning several songs, such as Hesitate, Care, Murasaki and Love or Like. He is best friends Yamashita Tomohisa of NEWS and Shirota Yuu from D-Boys, as well as NEWS and Kanjani8 member Nishikido Ryo.
When Jin was in school, his teacher often read his kanji (仁) wrong and called him Hitoshi. Because of this many fans seem to believe that his name is in fact Akanishi Hitoshi - which is incorrect. The name Jin comes from 仁義礼智信 (jingireichishin) which means "the 5 Confucian virtues" and stands for benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and sincerity. Jin's name means "benevolence" and his younger brother Reo's name means "propriety".
Reo auditioned out for D-Boys - however, he did not pass the audition. Reo is therefore not a member of D-Boys, as most believe, but is working together with Shirota Yuu's brother Jun in a jewelry shop in Shibuya.
It was announced in October 2006 that Jin would take an indefinite hiatus from KAT-TUN in order to study language abroad. The official statement posted a minimum time of six months depending on his success in his studies and during a press conference also cited health issues.
On the 18th of April 2007, Johnny's Entertainment announced the return of Akanishi. At a press conference held on April 20th, he mentioned that he took voice lessons in America during the latter half of his stay so that he would not fall behind once he got back.
He was also present at the Sendai concert soon after where he performed Real Face during the encore. Although he admitted that he had forgotten most of his lyrics while on hiatus, the other members of KAT-TUN were quick to assure him that they would re-teach him everything he needed to know.

- He was voted by young members of Johnny's Juniors as the best-looking member of KAT-TUN in "KAT-TUN wo Abake".
- Jin has three dogs, one of which is a toy poodle bought together with band member Kamenashi Kazuya and named Pin by Jin's mother (not by Yamapi as thought by some fans). The name is a combination of Jin's name and Yamapi's.
- Jin's wide vocal range is often showcased in KAT-TUN songs.
- Jin was ranked # 1 as the most wanted lover and most sexy idol in Japan according to a popular poll taken by DUET magazine in 2007
- Jin, Yamashita Tomohisa, and Shirota Yuu all have friendship necklaces in the shape of a woman's silhouette bought by Jin himself.
- Jin and Yamapi have a special handshake that ends in a heart which they used to perform when they were children.
- He is often talked about as being lazy and selfish. Something he doesn't wholeheartedly object to.
- Jin is often given female roles when performing skits with his band members because he 'looks good as a girl'; Tanaka Koki once stated that he felt 'doki doki' seeing Jin in a nurse uniform.
